Dates added to the running of popular adaptation

Posted: 29.01.15

It seems that a trend has started - first there was the successful remake of East Is East hitting the stage and now Bend It Like Beckham is also following suit. The highly successful movie, which was directed by Gurinder Chadha, has been adapted for theatre in the surprising form of a musical. An additional 200,000 tickets will be available for the London, since the running time has been extended until 24 October, instead of the initial date of 11 July. The British comedy film which released in 2002, launched critically acclaimed actress Keira Knightly, and has long since become a favourite British Asian themed flick. The story revolves around Jess, played by Natalie Dew, whose unconventional love and ambition for football, clash with the stereotypical expectations of her Punjabi family.
Other notable cast includes vocal queen, Preeya Kalidas who will star as Jess' sister Pinky, as well as Jamie Campbell Bower playing the dishy football coach. The audience are in for a treat of an entertaining evening with this hilarious and delightful tale, accompanied by an original score with a Punjabi kick by musical maestro Kuljit Bhamra. It will be interesting to see how the added twist of singing will fare with the audience - although which desi doesn't enjoy a good ol' song and dance?! Officially opening at the Phoenix Theatre on 24 June 2015, previews begin on 15 May 2015.
