Celebrate the 44th anniversary of Bangladesh's Independence from March 20th-29th

Rich Mix, East London’s independent cinema and arts venue, celebrates the 44th anniversary of Bangladesh’s Independence this March with some of the most exciting, cutting edge and thought-provoking contemporary artists working in the UK, Bangladesh and beyond. Building on the enormous success of last years’ festival, Freedom Week 2015 at Rich Mix sets out to excite and delight audiences as well as provoke thought and conversation. The programme will include live music, film, theatre, family activities and talks, many of which will be free.

Thursday 5th - Saturday 28th: DEFYING THE LAWS OF GRAVITY

Drik is delighted to present Defying the Laws of Gravity at Rich Mix, an exhibition of photography from the pioneering media school Pathshala in Bangladesh. Abir Abdullah, Taslima Akhter, Sarker Protick, Jannatul Mawa, Anisul Hoque, Tushikur Rahman and Shahidul Alam collectively shape one of the most powerful photographic movements of modern times.

Friday 20th: MUSIC TO CHANGE LIVES

Culturepot Global presents a thought provoking talk by Rezwana Choudhury Bannya on Music For Development, the inspirational music education project in Dhaka, following which she performs her repertoire of Tagore songs.

Saturday 21st: RHYTHMS FOR PEACE

An exciting collaboration between musicians from Bangladesh, Nepal and London with a message of peace and freedom with music, film and food.

Saturday 21st: YERMA

A Kathak interpretation of Frederico Garcia Lorca’s anguishing story of Yerma, who suffers heart breaking social torment of a childless marriage that forces her to commit a horrific and an irrevocable act. Dance with live music.

Sunday 22nd: BALLAD OF FREEDOM

Capturing the spirit and inspiration that led to the freedom movement & celebrating the independence of Bangladesh through music, dance and photography.

Sunday 22nd: MASS E BHAT LIVE WITH FILMS FOR FOOD

A special screening of documentary Mass E Bhat, which explores a shifting society through the eyes of its children. With live score by John Pandit and the musicians behind the soundtrack.

Monday 23rd: EDUCATION - A BIRTH RIGHT

Culturepot Global present a panel discussion with innovators in education including Bangladesh born anti-poverty solutions organisation BRAC.

Tuesday 24th: DRAMA IN THE MIX SHOWCASE

An evening celebrating the creativity of East London school pupils in a live showcase of eight fantastic radio plays written by them, responding to this year’s theme: Freedom.

Thursday 26th: OFF THE GRID / KHIYO

The film Off The Grid documents an island in Bengal, focusing on its inhabitants battling the loneliness of a disconnected life. Followed by live music from Khiyo; giving Bengali heritage music a London twist.

Friday 27th: THE ALL NIGHT FREEDOM FESTIVAL CURATED BY SOUMIK DATTA
8pm – 8am / £35, £15 concs, £30 adv / Various Spaces
An unmissable 12 hours of live music from dusk ‘til dawn. Award winning composer, sarod player and Rich Mix artist in residence Soumik Datta takes over the entire building for this festival within a festival.

Sunday 29th: OF BLOOD AND FIRE
3pm and 7:30pm / £8, £6 concs / Upstairs
Play bringing to life the diary entries of Jahanara Imam, a Bangladeshi writer and political activist best remembered for her efforts to bring to trial those accused of committing war crimes in the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.
