Gayatri Sahay gets the party started with a little help from Hard Kaur
PLAY; Party Loud All Year, comes five years after Hard Kaur’s debut album Supawoman and having listened to lead track Mujhe Peenay Do, we guarantee that it’s going to be the ultimate soundtrack for your next celebration!
Hard Kaur is India’s first lady of rap and has amazingly been on the music scene for nearly two decades. While her debut album dealt predominately with what it’s like to be a female rapper and giving fans an insight of her background and upbringing, PLAY is a celebration of being Hard Kaur. She confessed: ‘I’m in a happier place in my life now, earning my living from something I actually enjoy doing so it’s time to celebrate!’
Though don’t be fooled. While she may be a party girl on the outside, her ultimate night out involves being as far away from the dancefloor as possible! She explains: ‘It’s part of my job. I’m always at launch parties or awards ceremonies so when I get time off I like to go for movies or nice dinners with my friends.’
Although her jet-setting lifestyle sees her heading on short breaks to exotic destinations like Australia and New Zealand and flying her mum to Kerala for long weekends of pampering, Hard Kaur continues to be a humble and level headed artist. She reveals: ‘You have to remember where you came from. At the end of the day we’re all going to die! So, whilst we’re here we should live and let live.’
With 35 smash hits under her belt in the last four years alone and the girl behind one of the most played tunes of last year, she is continuing to break new ground as a female musician not only carving a niche in Bollywood, but she’s cracked Tellywood too, appearing on Jhalak Dikhla Ja, Comedy Circus, IPL Rockstar and recently guested on Bigg Boss. Music wise she’s collaborated with a host of influential artists including Mika and Eminem’s band D12 and she’s also found time to squeeze in a fashion collection.
Call her many things but whatever you do don’t mention the ‘Indian Lady Gaga.’ Hard Kaur says: ‘I think she’s fabulous, but I’m more of a Salman Khan when it comes to the bad boy image!’ If you follow either of them on Twitter you would have recently witnessed the affectionate tweets between her and Sallu – bless!
But just how is it that she’s managed to break into India when she’s so unlike any other female singer in the country? She explains: ‘There’s a huge hip-hop following in India. I actually think people here are more up-to-date with American hip-hop music than they are in the UK.’ A sound you can hear on PLAY. She added: ‘It’s still true to the hip-hop meets Hindi pop vibe and is meant to get you on the dancefloor.’
If that’s not unique enough, we’ve been promised a dubstep Ganpati track in February!
Or if you can’t wait that long, Hard Kaur will be releasing her next single in December, right in time for a rocking New Years Eve!
PLAY by Hard Kaur is out now.
