Lord Of The Dance

Why Shahid Kapoor is the man with the moves…

If you had to pick who is Bollywood's ultimate sweetheart from the boys, Shahid would win hands down and not just because of his cute baby face. No one has a bad word to say about him, especially after he wowed the audience at the Film Fare Awards in 2010 where he performed a personal tribute to his hero Michael Jackson, cementing himself a place in Indian cinematic history as one of the dancing greats. Shahid has just taken on one of the most testing roles of his career, starring in Haider, an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Hamlet which is already tipped to be one of the most powerful performances of his film life, the most powerful one on stage however could well be his live show with Bollywood Showstoppers which he's taking part in this weekend.
We grabbed a few minutes with him inbetween final rehearsals to talk about his love for dance...

Shahid, there is no denying that when it comes to moving your legs, you have a good few skills worth showing off...
Ha! Ha! Well I have always danced. Michael Jackson was obviously one of my biggest inspirations as he is for most people but in truth I was very shy. I used to dance at home but I felt like a fool dancing in front of other people so I didn’t really tell anyone. Afterwards when I was studying at college I got a chance to dance professionally. I also grew up around dancing – my mother was a classically trained kathak dancer so you could say dancing is in my genes.

So how often do you dance, we’re guessing every day?
No! I wish I could dance every day. My brother is 18 and he is a brilliant dancer – he always says to me ‘Shahid you should dance as it stops you getting old.’ But with acting as well, the dancing sometimes takes a back seat - and actually I think my brother is a better dancer than me!

Not everyone has the confidence to dance how can they get over that?
Whenever I'm at a party and I'm in a room I know straight away who doesn't want to dance so I always make the first move and guide them to the floor to get them started - my advice is therefore to just do it!

We can’t wait to see you live in London as part of Bollywood Showstoppers. What do you have in store for us?
Well it’s a very nostalgic performance – as well as the big hits I’m known for I have selected some of my favourite songs and will be performing them as part of a medley. They’ll be Dhan Te Dhan from Kaminey and Mauja Hi Mauja from Jab We Met and of course all the rest of the team from Bolly Flex and your other favourite stars! I’m really excited about coming to London – I love it there.

In that case can we keep you?
This time is just a short trip but I’ll be back. I am going to be spending two months shooting in London in September and October for a film, my favourite time as the weather is great then and people in the UK are so friendly so I love being here!

Shahid Kapoor will be performing on Sunday 3rd August 2014 along with Bolly Flex as part of Bollywood Showstoppers
at The 02 in London
