It's not every day a film about baseball gets your cheering in your cinema seats...
Ok, so baseball may not be the most British of sports but unbelievably the UK now has more baseball playing adults than it's ever had which means it's a sport you need to know about. Thankfully you can start with the easy option, watching a movie about it. Disney's Million Dollar Arm stars American actor Jon Hamm (of Mad Men fame) as a baseball agent on the look out for new talent to save his failing business. When one of the countries biggest baseball stars refuses to sign up with him, he has a lightbulb moment to travel to India and find two fresh-faced and eager lads who are willing to become sportsmen - after all if they know how to bowl for cricket they can easily pick up some baseball skills? Yes it sounds ridiculous but Million Dollar Arm is not just a fictional movie - it is a film based on real life - this actually happened and is still happening.
The film stars rising Indian actors Suraj Sharma (Life Of Pi) and Madhur Mittal (Slumdog Millionaire) as the village boys who train to become professional baseball players, both who shine on the screen thanks to their very likeable characters. An entertaining family film that ticks all the right boxes, you can't go wrong watching it over the weekend (possibly Saturday night) so that come Sunday, feeling inspired you can all go down the park and pitch up for your own family match.
Million Dollar Arm premiered at The London Indian Film Festival 2014 and is released in UK cinemas nationwide on August 29th.
