Sonam Kapoor talks expectations, fashion, romancing Salu, finding her Prince Charming and her forthcoming release Prem Ratan Dhan Payo…
It’s been a while since Bollywood has treated us to an authentic family orientated romantic story much like everyone’s old favourites Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Maine Pyar Kiya. That’s why the man behind those very classics, Sooraj Barjatya brings us Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, a fairytale romance amidst a close knit family backdrop, just in time for Diwali. Who can forget the lovable, dreamy hero Prem of both those classics movies, whilst the sweet heroines also filled a special place in everyone’s hearts. And that’s why Sonam Kapoor, who will be starring opposite Prem, played by noneother than Salman Khan once more, has some pretty high expectations to live up to. Although, she needn’t worry too much, as her natural charm, sweet demeanour and just that smile alone will win over the audience, making her the ideal choice for the role of Maithili – a princess who is wooed by the one and only Prem. I had the pleasure of catching up with the lovely lady herself, where she shares her thoughts on the movie and some other things close to her heart…
Everyone is really excited to see the on screen romance between you and Salman, how was it working with him? There were reports that you were nervous?
It was amazing working with Salman, because he’s such a good guy - he’s so professional and hard working. He’s also so good looking, so it was lovely to romance him! But obviously working on such a big film with such an iconic director and such a huge star, there’s abit of trepidation. You go onto the set and think oh how am I going to do, will I live up to everyone’s expectations, I hope I don’t screw it up for everyone. But Sooraj Barjatya is such a nice man and he’s so encouraging - he believes in me so much, so after the first couple of days, I felt like I was at home, as he gave me so much confidence. Salman was also really sweet.
What can the audience expect from the movie?
They will be really entertained and happy, it’s such a positive film, it’s filled with amazing music and moments. It’s a great film to go with your whole family – perfect for Diwali.
What were your favourite moments whilst shooting?
There’s so much that happened, so we put up these really beautiful making of the movie videos on Twitter and Youtube. But we were all so engrossed in working and trying to do the best that we can, we were all just working really hard. But we had such a great time working together.
You play a princess in the movie, and I’m sure your life is no less princess-like! But are there aspects of Maithili’s life that you wish were real for you?
Well I hope there’s a real life Prem for me somewhere, honestly he is going to be a tall order but I hope I get somebody like that. That’s my real life inspiration – to find a Prem!
Salman is holding a special screening of the movie for Madhuri and Bhagyashree who were past heroines of Sooraj’s love stories– do you feel anxious living up to the expectations as heroine opposite the original romantic hero Prem?
I think being Anil Kapoor’s daughter has already prepared me to deal with people having unrealistic expectations of me, but I’m already so hard on myself, I think eventually, nobody can be more critical. I think I’ll always be compared to the others, but it’s ok I’ll live with it.
The sets were so extravagant – how did it feel being part of such splendour?
I really did feel like a princess! There was a sheesh mahal built for the movie as well and for the song Jalte Diye, there were 1000 diyas lit (although I couldn’t count them all!) so the movie really is a stunning feast for the eyes.
What kind of prince charming will win princess Sonam’s heart?
Somebody who is a good guy - which is really difficult to find, someone honest, who has the right funda, who is idealistic – it’s the most difficult thing to find. And he will have a tough time impressing my dad!
There are a lot of fantastic songs in the movie, which is your favourite?
I think it would have to be Jalte Diye – the picturisation is so pretty!
What are your expectations of the movie’s success after its release?
I try not to have expectations of any of my films. I just do my best and hope that people think it’s a good film and have a connection with it and want to watch it in the cinema. I just always give it my best and hope for the best!
There have been a lot of Dub Smash renditions of the movie songs floating around on social media, which has been your favourite?
I think everyone’s done such a great job and it’s so exciting that fans from all over the world are doing this to support me and make me happy and I love all of them for doing it. I will try to watch every one of them whenever I can but it’s completely going mad, my phone actually crashed at one point! I just want to thank everyone for supporting me so much.
You are of course the reigning fashion queen of Bollywood - I think we all wish we had your wardrobe! So, I can’t resist a rapid fire fashion round…
What’s your favourite thing in your wardrobe right now?
I love wearing different clothes and I get to wear the best of the best because people send me stuff, right now I think I have it all.
What is your must have accessory?
What do you feel most comfortable in?
A sari, I feel the prettiest and most comfortable wearing one, despite the reams of cloth to control!
Heels or no heels?
What’s the best fashion tip you can give your fans?
Be yourself, always. Don’t try to be something that you’re not.
Can you share what’s next for you?
Im doing a film based on a real life events called Neerja, which is again with Fox Star and I’m very excited to be playing the role of Neerja herself, a brave soul who fought to save lives whilst working as an air hostess on a hijacked flight. It will hopefully be releasing in the first quarter of next year, so right now I’m gearing up for the post-production of that straight after this film. That is the only thing that is in the pipeline right now that I can speak about – the rest, you will have to wait and see!
