LFW 2015: Lust List

VIVALUXE.COM reveal their best bits from Lakme Fashion Week 2015

Posted: 24.03.15

Exactly a week ago, that monster of fashion flamboyance (a.k.a LAKMÉ FASHION WEEK) sauntered into our lives like a half-year Christmas, bringing along with it the best and brightest of fashion, Bollywood and international media interest. We look back at the exuberance and extravaganza and our favourite goodies from the industry’s best designers and their delicious new collections at this 2015 15th year anniversary! It’s a tough job folks, but someone’s gotta do it!

Sabyasachi’s Love Parade

Any round up of LFW 2015 would be amiss if it didn’t include the Sabyasachi Lennon-esque opening night ode to the 70’s - complete with power dressing, unisex flower-power, long maxi-dresses and oodles upon oodles of glittery fabric. The ramp was a never ending 200 x 20 feet, with high-tech multi laser lights, roving drone and camera mounted on gantry. It was the ultimate backdrop for a high-octane event worthy of a 15th year anniversary with the crème de la crème of the city in attendance as one of the best designers in India opened the celebrations with a spectacular show. His eternal muse Rani Mukherjee and other Bollywood big shots like Kajol, Deepika Padukone and Sridevi were all present to show their support. It was love at first sight for the audience as they witnessed a stunning presentation featuring 62 models and 105 outfits.

When work-wear refused to be boring

In complete contrast, Day 2 of LFW was all about fuss-free fun; meets cutting edge style. DRVV by Dhruv Kapoor showed us that work wear didn’t need to conventional when he deconstructed the conventional shirt, while Quirkbox showed us how to take traditional tailoring but match it with fun sport prints and well… quirk! Its travel themed collection was an interesting mix of pastels and bold hued prints on solid whites. Wearability was the focus without going OTT yet staying quirkishly cool, accompanied by fun bags and sneakers (a trend that is over two years old now but seems as though it won’t budge any time soon…. we’re not complaining guys)!

The Saree became Sassy

Nikhil Thampi! The man has created quite a stir in the Indian fashion scene be it Bollywood or editorials. The shouts, cries and applause for him from the audience is rather overwhelming but hey, he deserves it! Canary yellow drapes trailed sashayed the runway as he unveiled his version of the classic Saree. His collection would be incomplete without his signature use of tan leather, which was used beautifully in accents with gowns, crop tops, bustiers and belts (all of which we love because they can be worn individually to funk up a more conventional Saree). The 70’s is synonymous with Spring-Summer 2015 and Nikhil Thampi is well aware. It was throwback to jazzy metallic, be it dresses, jackets or Travolta-esque tailored suits.

When Mumbai was invaded by the Americans

We took a quick trip to NYC for Asmita Marwa’s collection that almost yelled fun and frolic when we saw the models breaking into all sorts of dance moves and bends. What a sport show-stopper Adhuna Akhtar was (Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar's wife), as she hopped down the runway twirling and pumping to Got The Moves Like Jagger, while the audience sang in chorus.

Babita Malkani’s native Alaskan inspired collection was all about bohemian style, be it the flowy silhouettes, chevron print, earthy hues, fringe or feathers. All eyes were on Soha Ali khan when she made a royal entrance, looking stunning as ever while showing of her fab bod in a little top and flowy skirt.

When the King did a turn!

Finally no round up Indian fashion highlights would be complete without mention of the King of Indian fashion - Manish Malhotra. Never failing to disappoint, Manish Malhotra proved his mettle as both, designer and humanitarian yet again, as his Blue Fashion Runway raised awareness for Gender Inequality. His signature peaches, creams and blues were stretched all along the colour palette so that every shade from baby-blue to mid-night blue was shown off and every shade of yellow from custard to canary and in between used to great effect. Of course, in try Malhotra style, each and every garment was garnished with stunning metallic embroidery.

So there you have it, another year and another round up of the best moments in one of Asian Fashion’s biggest highlights, but there’s no need to feel down just yet because next week is the start of Amazon India Fashion Week so stay tuned for even more fashion, fun and frolics!
