Posted: 25.02.13

With a career spanning over 23 years, Manish Malhotra is a household name in India and a global leader when it comes to Asian fashion. He’s dressed countless Bollywood stars on filmsets, for high profile events and even on their wedding day.
The fashion designer shot to fame in the early 1990's as a costume designer and stylist for a number of epic Bollywood films including Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and later for several Karan Johar movies.
Last year he designed the wedding wear for Kareena Kapoor.

His own label is sold in his boutique and sold throughout India and Dubai. Last weekend he brought his exquisite collection to London, for the first time, showcasing some of his finest women’s and menswear collections at the Grosvenor House Hotel, in aid of The Angeli Foundation, a charity that works to empower the Girl Child in India.

The 450-strong audience at The Angeli Foundation Gala Fundraiser consisting of British Asian stars and fashion fans were on their feet with rapturous applause as Malhotra’s Bollywood buddies Parineeti Chopra and Urmila Matondkar walked the ramp to support the designer and the cause.

Amongst the celebrities attending were soap stars Jimi Harkishin, Sunetra Sarker and Ace Bhatti; BBC Sports presenter Sonali Shah; TV and radio presenters Anita Rani and Nihal; actor Adil Ray better known as Citizen Khan; as well as the stunning actress turned singer Preeya Kalidas.

Speaking exclusively to Asiana.TV Eastender’s actress Shivani Ghai admitted: ‘I’m not that familiar with Manish, I mainly wear western clothes but I’ve heard so much about him so wanted to see it for myself.’
We also caught up with The Family stars Sunny and Shay who were excited to be at the show. Shay who was wearing a bold red top gushed: ‘I love fashion but too many Asians don’t wear colour, especially in winter. Hopefully they’ll get inspired by Manish!’

Manish’s collection revealed a collection that celebrated contemporary India and it’s traditional craftsmanship. As well as his signature floor length anarkalis. The catwalk consisted of volumised skirts, long lenghas and pretty backless gowns. Key trends included lace and gold work.

When we asked Manish why we’ve had to wait so long to see him on the UK shores he admitted: ‘I do so much: films, expansion plans – I was involved in an event at Selfridges 10 years ago but now I’m here with my own show and I will do more.’ Gearing up for his new collection launch next month, Manish described his current range as the perfect partwear: ‘It’s all about celebration. Tonight’s catwalk show isn’t bridal, but they are the kind of garments you can wear to a sangeet or mendhi.’ He also confessed his love for women’s clothes: ‘I love saris! And also structured garments and backs.’

The designer selected The Angeli Foundation as the charity of choice for his UK launch after the horrific rape of Jyoti Singh Pandey in Delhi highlighted the shocking inequality and attitudes towards women in our country.
Ratika Puri Kapoor, chair of UK Chapter of The Angeli Foundation said: ‘Everyone is equal, we should treat all people equally and education is key to this’.’

The Manish Malhotra Fashion Extravaganza in aid of The Angeli Foundation and in association with Rivaage Boutique took place on Saturday 23rd February 2013 at the Grosvenor House Hotel.
The event was sponsored by Air India and Exclusive Cakes4U.
