Momtaz Begum-Hossain calms down at London's most relaxing spa

Posted: 06.03.12

While I’m my own worst nightmare at the minute (stressed out, tired insomniac who’s too worn out to even eat); I’m every therapist’s dream. It’s not surprising considering I’m tying the knot in a fortnight and my ‘to do list’ is the quickest growing paperwork ever known to womankind. One minute I’m stressing so much my hair is going grey, the next I’m falling fast asleep on the train home and missing my stop. So one thing was clear: I needed urgent TLC and no where could have been better made for me than Chi-Yu; a Japanese inspired wellness centre specialising in oriental and complimentary therapies.

It’s a short walk from the bustling streets of Oxford Street, yet as soon as you step inside you’re instantly transported to a calming oasis, made even more perfect when you’re offered a soothing cup of fresh Jing tea, just the thing to sip as you collapse into the sofas and fill out a questionnaire about your current state of health.

The wellness centre is run by it’s founder Mami Tsang who doesn’t make you fill out forms just for procedures; it helps her determine the exact treatment you need. This isn’t your run of the mill spa where the menu includes the same old packages, Chi Yu offers a fully bespoke service thanks to it’s Integrated Therapy session – just like no two customers are the same, neither is the massage. Mami and her team have a one-to-one consultation with you where they establish your exact requirements and rather than dictating the organic essentials oils used, you’re given a choice so that your mood and preferences shape your own personal blend. I opted for a gorgeous concoction of bergamot, geranium and sandlewood which Mami applied to what can only be described as the most relaxing and comforting massage I’ve ever experienced. As I drifted off into a trance like nap, Mami combined the treatments she knew would work for me –holistic aromatherapy, craniosacral therapy, meridian, deep tissue and remedial massage and finished off with a pampering reflexology and eastern foot massage. This was followed by a heavenly one-hour chidoria Japanese facial using natural Japanese products such as a silk face powder, pure camedlia oil and red beans which act as a fantastic exfoliant. I emerged, with the most glowing skin I’ve ever had, with all my tension and negative energises dissolved.

Having experienced a fair few massages in my time, I can honestly say nothing has ever come close to the Chi Yu experience. Mami’s deserves an award for her outstanding knowledge of wellbeing therapies so next time you’re looking a massage I guarantee you won’t find anywhere as special as this; it’s the ultimate in ‘me time’ experiences.

Chi Yu’s bespoke signature package combining their Integrated Therapy and Chidoria Japanese Facial (2 hr treatment) costs £120.
