De-stress with a shirodhara treatment at Ayurveda Pura

Posted: 26.04.13

Go anywhere in India and you’re never far from a sign pointing to an Ayurvedic parlour, massage or treatment centre. An ancient holistic system that originated in India and is now revered all over the world, Ayurveda is considered a complete way of life. But for some people, rather than immersing themselves in all the philosophies it can be just as beneficial to check in with a specialist and book an Ayurvedic treatment to refresh, balance and get back in touch with their inner wellbeing.

One woman who has dedicated her life and business to the practice of Ayurveda is Dr Deepa Apte MBBS. A qualified yoga teacher and Ayurvedic Practitioner Deepa runs her own spa and vegetarian cafe in London; Ayurveda Pura, is lead lecturer at their Academy and has designed a complete product range of natural toiletries and tea to compliment her treatments.

If you’re new to Ayurveda, the first thing you’ll need to do is book a consultation, these are provided before every treatment at Ayurveda Pura, but more in-depth consultations can be also be booked. Here a qualified Ayurvedic Practitioner will take a detailed look at your health and lifestyle before establishing your body to suggest which type of treatments you could benefit from.

Secrets of the shirodhara
One of the most popular treatments is the Shirodhara; a wonderfully blissful treatment that involves a steady stream of warm oil, gently poured in a rhythmical movement over your forehead. Deeply relaxing and stress relieving, it’s a heavenly experience that will calm you down immediately.

Just like you’re going for any other kind of spa treatment, you’re asked to undress, lie down and are covered in a towel. Soothing atmospheric sounds fill the space as you close your eyes in the dimlit room which has a gorgeous, familiar aroma – that of sesame oil, the traditional oil used in shirodhara treatments. Rose water pads are then placed over your eyelids.

The process begins with a cleanse and face massage, the therapists fingers press into certain parts of your skin like around your eyes, lips and nostrils, which already create a blissful feeling before the oil has even arrived. Warm, oil is then flowed continously over your forehead, as you drift off into a peaceful restful state, leaving behind any worries you walked in with. Treatments can last anywhere from 35 minutes to over and hour, depending on what you need. It’s perfectly natural to feel sleepy during the treatent – it’s a sign it’s working but once over, you’ll feel revived and refreshed. The session ends with a mild head massage and shower.

Shirodhara is the perfect choice for anyone who needs some pampering tlc, is feeling over-worked and stressed, offering a way for you calm down, think straight and feel great. Other classic Ayurveda treatments include full head massage, back and body treatments. Follow with a soothing cup of herbal tea before facing the outside world again.
