Dhol drumming is standard at weddings but there’s a difference between playing an instrument to notify your guests that the groom has arrived and an entertainment spectacle which is what Lions of Punjab create. The Midlands-based Bhangra dance group are on a mission to keep Punjabi culture, folk dance and live entertainment alive while bringing their infectious energy to weddings across the UK. Asiana spoke to the band’s manager Rashpal Jagpal about what you can expect when you book them for your Big Day.

What can couples expect when they book Lions of Punjab for their wedding?
Get ready for a vibrant, high-energy, interactive performance that fuses traditional Punjabi culture with modern entertainment. But it won’t just be us doing the dancing. We create such a fun atmosphere that your guests will want to join in. The size of our troupe depends on your event, but this is something we discuss with couples along with their track preferences.

What inspired you to create a group that’s so rooted in Punjabi culture?
Punjabi weddings are full of emotion, celebration and family traditions and we love that they bring together people of all ages, who all connect with the music and the spirit of the celebration. We perform in traditional Punjabi outfits and colourful turbans and this has always been important to us.

What types of performance are popular for weddings?
We advise a mix of classic bhangra tracks along with current Punjabi hits to suit all generations. For weddings most couples opt for:

• Traditional dhol led bhangra

• Modern Punjabi party songs

• Folk and Modern Live Boliyan

• High-energy dance performances

Where else do you perform apart from weddings?
We’ve been fortunate to perform alongside major Punjabi artists including Diljit Dosanjh. Jazzy B and Sukhshinder Shinda, which have all been incredible experiences. We’ve also performed at the Commonwealth games and Asiana Lifestyle Show. Everywhere we go, we bring the same energy and passion and those that witness us are guaranteed to have a great time!
