Asiana Wedding Magazine caught up with Anu to discover more about her passion as a performer and why live piano music is guaranteed to strike a chord with your guests.

What drew you to learning how to play the piano?
I’ve always had a natural passion for music and from a young age, I enjoyed singing. However, my venture into playing the piano happened unexpectedly. My mum had planned to attend the Michael Jackson concert in 2009, but he had passed away months before the concert. In search of something special to channel the refunded ticket money into, she decided to purchase a piano, and began taking private piano lessons. She enjoyed it so much that she decided to enrol my twin sister and I onto private lessons too learning the piano and electronic keyboard at the age of eight. After years of playing the piano and studying Music at A’ Level, I became certain that I wanted my career to be in music. Unsure whether to pursue composition or performance, I furthered my studies in music at the University of Nottingham where I achieved a first-class degree. It was here, while exploring various modules, including piano performance, that I discovered an interest in playing the piano professionally.

What is the main appeal of piano music for a wedding?
No other instrument connects with guests like a piano. It can convey a broad spectrum of emotions, from gentle and reflective to powerful and dramatic, depending on how it’s played by the pianist. Its adaptability makes it suit different musical styles, offering something for everyone. At a wedding this means it crosses all generations, so the older guests adore the classical tracks, while young guests love to hear contemporary music given an unexpected twist.

When do you usually play at weddings?
Many couples assume they only require music for their First Dance, but music can provide a soundtrack to your entire day. I can be flexible to ensure my playing complements your schedule. I tend to play at drink receptions, during wedding breakfasts or can provide the background music to elevate a space.

How do guests react to your live performances?
Playing the piano at weddings has brought about many memorable reactions. Guests often come up, eager to sing along to their favourite Bollywood songs as I play them. Older guests get excited when classic tunes bring back special memories for them. It’s also fun to see lively groups, including children, gathering to dance to my music. These moments of shared joy make playing the piano at weddings truly enjoyable.

What can couples expect when they book you?
Firstly, they can expect a memorable musical experience for their event, an element that guests will enjoy and talk about. As a dedicated performer, I strive to create an atmosphere that aligns with the theme of their occasion, so I ask the couple what type of set they would like to complement their vision.

I aim to keep the process for booking me as simple as possible. I begin by asking the client questions about the event, which allows me to create a personalised quote. A deposit of £100 secures the date. I offer a diverse repertoire which spans various genres including Bollywood, classical and contemporary hits. I send across my wedding playlist and they can then select a number of their favourite songs. I use top-tier professional equipment including a portable baby grand piano and a professional Bose PA system which I bring and set up at the venue, so there’s nothing for the couple to worry about, the logistics are taken care of.

Anu’s enthusiasm for being a wedding pianist is infectious and with her elegance and graceful performances, her music is guaranteed to transform your wedding day from ordinary to extraordinary. She sums up: “Piano music has the power to truly elevate a wedding. The piano’s elegance adds a touch of sophistication and class to any event. It creates an inviting and enjoyable atmosphere for all your guests, making your celebration even more special than you ever imagined and I’m honoured to be part of that magic.”
