Paradise Island

Fariha Sabir-Bajwa finds the ultimate honeymoon haven in Seychelles, amidst picture perfect scenes of sun, sea, sand and palms, whilst enjoying the most luxurious properties on the island

There is nothing more romantic than fleeing reality with your loved one and hiding out on a dreamy island in the middle of the ocean. Made up of an archipelago of 115 islands surrounded by the crystal waters of the Indian Ocean, Seychelles makes the ideal retreat following the excitement of your wedding.

Its tropical climate and environment harbours lush greenery, along with the most idyllic beaches. Combine the stunning scenery with the relaxed Seychellois vibe, you will soon find yourself gently ebbing and flowing to the rhythm of island life.

FOCUS ON: Banyan Tree Seychelles

As you arrive at Banyan Tree Seychelles, you are first greeted by its namesake – an enormous Banyan tree that protectively looms over the establishment, lit up with whimsical hanging lanterns.

Booming notes of the ocean fill your ears and have an instantly calming effect. With only 60 intimate villas, whichever one you choose will impress. Waking up to the sweeping views of the tranquil Seychellois landscape will take your breath away every morning, featuring the contrasting turquoise waters, against the emeralds of the majestic hills. Staying true to its heritage, there is a French and English colonial influences from the wooden pillars and tiled roofs, to the understated yet chic décor and classic soft furnishings. The soothing hues of teals and blues complement the horizon beautifully, whilst the discreet positioning of each villa allows for the utmost privacy and exclusivity.

Banyan Tree spas are renowned worldwide for their ultimate romantic pamper experiences, so be sure to indulge in one, particularly the outdoor couples massage, where you are lulled into an otherworldly zone by the sweet melodies of nature – the birds chirping and the leaves rustling against the light sea breeze. Taking a daily dip in your private pool or basking in the sunshine on your lounger, will ensure a Zen state of mind throughout your stay.

Enjoy the flavoursome delights of local Creole dining, or sample global cuisines including delicious Arabic and Thai at the three on-site restaurants, leaving you spoilt for choice.

One of the most wonderful marvels to savour in Seychelles is interacting with the native giant tortoises, since Seychelles is home to these pre-historic, Jurassic reminiscent creatures. Be sure to support the efforts of the resort by visiting the tortoises on-site, rescued from dangerous conditions and looked after until they are well enough to fend for themselves.

There is no wonder why this location was chosen for the resort, as it encircles the most picturesque beach I have ever seen. The most romantic memory you will take away is leaving your footprints along the white blanket of perfect sand, hand in hand with your loved one, watching the magnificent sunset melt away into the horizon, as the waves come crashing into the gigantic boulder rocks, which seem exclusively characteristic to Seychellois beaches. Quite honestly, the beach here is perhaps one of the prettiest on the island, so don’t be surprised if you don’t want to leave your sanctuary at all.

Rooms at Banyan Tree Seychelles start from £617 per night. To book: www.banyantree.com/en

FOCUS ON: MAIA Luxury Resort & Spa Seychelles

The beauty of MAIA is the seclusion, making it the ultimate hideaway for couples seeking intimacy and privacy. Upon arrival, we excitedly flung open our villa doors, which unveiled luxury beyond our imagination. Discreetly located within a private peninsula on Mahé island, the resort is perched precisely on its own pedestal with breathtaking views of the stunning azure and emerald colour palette of the Seychellois scenery.

Each of the 30 exclusive villas is equally impressive and decadent, featuring its own kitchen/bar where your butler can prepare your wining and dining if you don’t wish to leave your villa. Whether you want to try the local Creole cuisine or fancy a pizza, the international menu fulfills every culinary desire at any time of the day or night with their ‘Whenever, Wherever, Whatever’ concept. Dining in the restaurant by the beach features some mellow live entertainment or if you prefer, you can dine in the privacy of your villa with mesmerising views. If you really want to treat your loved one, surprise them with a romantic dinner on the beach, whilst witnessing the artistic hues of the sunset.

Carefully designed, the décor is contemporary and stylish, featuring neutral and earthy hues. Even the bathroom sinks are fascinating – each one is a sleek marble column, finished with brass taps in the shape of the native Coco De Mer nut. The absolute height of plush comfort though, is the largest outdoor sunken marble bathtub I’ve ever seen. Our smiling butler Rashid was full of sweet surprises. One evening, he had run a bubble bath for us, filled with floating petals and there was even halal champagne. Due to our early morning check out, he thoughtfully prepared a delicious breakfast fit for royalty at our villa.

You will be blown away by the attention to detail, including delights such as Hermés toiletries in the shower and Bose sound system playing the most soothing harmonies apt for the surroundings – only the best will suffice here. Feel revitalised after a sumptuous couples massage at the outdoor spa, where you will instantly feel at one with nature.

These attentive and comforting touches is what makes MAIA so special – your every whim is catered to or if you prefer, you can hide away within the exclusivity of your opulent love nest, not to be disturbed until you need to be recalled back to reality.
