A Slice Of Heaven

For the perfect honeymoon spot that’s full of Mauritian charm, the Zilwa Attitude has everything you need

Doing nothing will never feel as good as it does on the beautiful island of Mauritius. With its sapphire-blue waters that sparkle in the sunshine, and the powder-white beaches that take your breath away, it’s the perfect place to spend your days lazing upon the sand and taking in the magnificent views of the Indian Ocean.

Situated on the north coast in Kalodyne, is Zilwa Attitude, a 4* hotel that is a “hymn” to Mauritius. Close to the fisherman’s village of Grand Gaube, this is the ideal spot for a romantic getaway where the surroundings are full of authentic Mauritian charm.

Built on 15 acres of land, the Zilwa Attitude features a contemporary rustic-chic design that evokes a back-to-basics beauty that pays tribute to the national heritage. Mauritian writers, painters, architects and craftsmen are celebrated at every turn, even in the rooms. Here you’ll find walls adorned in Creole riddles and paintings inspired by the Mauritian writer and painter, Malcolm de Chazal. On the cushions are reminders of his poetry, which offer invitations to faraway lands.

Once you’ve taken in the beautiful surroundings of this charming hotel, it’s time to sample the wonderful array of food on offer. With five restaurants to choose from, each one offers a blend of spicy and exquisite tastes from all over the world. You’ll hear it referred to as “Metisaz”: a delicious mix of Creole, Indian, Asian and European cuisines which are true to the cultural diversity of the island. But for lovers of food, choosing between the five need not be a problem, thanks to the Dine Around experience, which allows you to taste a different cuisine each day whilst taking in the different atmospheres.

The main restaurant “Karay” (the Creole word for a traditional cooling pot, an essential utensil in every Mauritian kitchen) has a beautiful view over the lagoon. All week long at breakfast and dinner, you can enjoy the theme buffets and the Mauritian specialities. You may be sometimes be surprised, but no doubt you’ll always be charmed by the numerous culinary influences. For a little more theatre, restaurant Siaw offers live Sino-Mauritian cooking amidst modern zen decoration and lighted bamboos, whereas restaurant Lor Disab is the perfect spot to enjoy the peace of the tropical night watch the moon rising over the silvery lagoon… and count the shooting stars!

The next thing of note is the exotic eco-friendly spa with its own herb garden. Here you can enjoy a relaxing massage within one of the wooden huts, where the care rituals are based on genuine natural elements of Mauritius: soil, sea, sun and plants.

For those who like a little more adventure, there are plenty of activities from beach volley and petanque to laser boats and kitesurfing. Early risers can join the traditional pirogue boat trip at sunrise, where the morning sun turns the lagoon delightful shades of blue and green while a local fisherman sails you to a nearby island for a light Mauritian breakfast.

Whether you prefer to lie on a beach all day or spend your time exploring the island, Mauritius is one of the most beautiful spots in the world to truly indulge. As Mark Twain once wrote, ‘Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius’. And in a place as authentic as this, Zilwa Attitude is a little slice of paradise that really takes you back to the root of what island life is all about.
